Malfunction - adventure game demo v. 1.2

Postby Kubold » Mon Sep 23, 2013 1:27 pm

Main.jpg

This is a very short FPP action/adventure style game for Oculus Rift, made in Unity. You are a guy, who just woke up in his apartment, your wife is in the kitchen making coffee, day like every day in Warsaw. Or is it?...

Version 1.2
- works on graphics cards without physics support (there are no more problems on macbooks!)

Version 1.1
- latency is better
- added credits :)
- added extra quality level with vsync on - I see no difference besides lower fps, but maybe somebody will find some advantages of this...

I thought I should make a small Oculus Rift experience, before I try to add Rift support to the game I'm currently developing. I learned a lot and now, I think it's time to share the result. I wish I could polish it more and more, but I already spent too much time on it, since this was supposed to be a three weeks long side project and I already spent more than a month of "weekends and evenings" on it. Big thanks to my wife Kasia for voice overs! It's in Polish, but you should get the context. Subtitles would actually be a really strange experience in vr. Or would they ;).

Fun fact: I never wrote a single line of code to make this. It was all done with Playmaker.

If you plan to download the game and play it, DON'T WATCH THE VIDEO! It's very short and it is basically a spoiler.

Looks awesome! Rift experiences are getting so much more compelling then they were months ago and they are only going to get better. :)
I'll try this later tonight.

This was well done. Sort of an interactive (very short) story.
Especially liked the window scenery and cloth physics (the dress).
Other things as well but I won't ruin it for others.

Hope this style translates into your other project, looking forward to it.

This demo gave me the best sense of presence of anything yet. I really started to feel like I was there. The avatar body really looked like it could be mine. I am a 6'3" white male so I guess it just fit well. Looking in the mirror was really trippy. I really liked this demo.

Agreed, sense of prescence was quite high. Window views, bright lighting, sounds all combine to give me a vefy strong feeling of being there. Some aspects of the woman's movements were also well done. The fact that everything was so "normal" I think added to suspension of reality. Thumbs up on this one.

Awesome! I was surprised by the quality of the animations, first person body, working mirror and the soundscape. Scale felt little too small (on the other hand I'm almost 2m tall), and the exteriors looked 2D (well because they mostly were) but that was not a problem. It was pretty short but still a great VR-experience. I would like to see more like this.

I was playing with my subwoofer on and at the end it just went crazy and scared the crap out of me. It was great

Hey! Dropbox just gave up and blocked the files due to traffic. I'll upload them to some other servers as soon as I can (2-3 hours). Sorry for that!

I must be retarded or something but I'm stuck, I have no idea how to "make her nervous". I also can't find the gun. Can someone drop me a tip?

Did you use motion capture for the animations? They are very well done and something I am struggling with at the moment. Can you give a bit on info on what you used?

O man... this was, without a doubt, my favorite VR experience yet! It felt so real!
I don't know how you did it, but everything felt just right. For the first time in VR-game walking actually felt like walking (and not just gliding or head-bobbing), virtual body felt like it was part of me... and apartment, while simple, was great and gave me a felling of really being there. Character was amazing, especially her natural animation (love the dress!). And the ending: when she lifted (and later droped ;) ) me, it felt so natural and not disorienting at all. It was really intense!

Anyway, this is my reaction to the whole demo:
It somehow reminded me of Heavy Rain (my favorite PS3 game), only this was much, much better, as you actually ARE the character and VR aspect really adds to the whole experience.

Wow, adventures with Rift will be amazing!
I want more! :)

EDIT: btw, for those of us who can't speak Polish, can you translate girl's dialogue at the beginning and end? Thanks

For some reason it gave me nausea. But true, the immersion is awesome.

crazy demo, sense of scale was very nice (im 1.77m), very strange to see myself as a white person in the mirror though haha

the only problem was there's distortion/lag when you look up and down, side to side is OK

Your mirrors are very fishy. Please upload your demo to Google Drive or something better otherwise I will not be able to test it.

I think the preview picture spoils too much, remove the terminator eye and the suprise / impact would be bigger?

This was really well done! Would love a translation of the dialogue. And I have to agree with TherionNLD, the preview picture pretty much gives the entire thing away.
